BRAND CRUSH // Companies De-Polluting the Ocean By Samantha Dammann

If you love Jolyn you probably love the water too. Whether it’s a lake or an ocean, we all have that one special place. Now, imagine your special water spot full of trash. It’s not a pleasant thought, is it? United By Blue and Devocean Co. are two companies, that we have major brand crushes on, working to make sure that nightmare never becomes a reality.

United By Blue and Devocean Co. both offer purchasable goods and volunteering opportunities. Purposeful purchases are great, and so is actually getting outside and physically affecting change. Whether you’re in need of a new pair of socks, or have a free weekend coming up, United By Blue and Devocean Co. give you the opportunity to make a splash with your actions.

United By Blue manufactures “responsible and durable goods,” and removes one pound of trash from the earth’s oceans and waterways for every product they sell. Since its inception in 2010 the company has led 177 cleanups in 26 states, reaching a grand total of 1,001,784 pounds of trash removed thus far from our precious bodies of water.

United By Blue products are meant to be used by urbanites and adventurers alike. They believe that all humans, no matter where you live or whether you enjoy swimming or not, are tied together by our common need for water. Here is their proclamation, found on their website:

“Whether you take our backpack camping or on the subway, or wear our flannel for fly fishing or bar hopping, we believe that we’re all united by the blue of our world’s oceans and waterways. We all share the responsibility of protecting them.”

United By Blue offers an array of products. Along with clothing, they offer items such as candles, soap, pocketknives and blankets. While the company manufactures some pricier goods, items under $15 are also available for purchase.

One of the coolest aspects of United By Blue is that they don’t restrict customer’s involvement to purchasing stuff. Anybody can be a part of United By Blue’s water cleanups and help remove trash from oceans and waterways. Joining a cleanup is free and easy.

Devocean Co. is a company that’s devoted to removing pollution from the earth’s oceans in order to save sea turtles. The company was founded in 2015 and currently donates 20% of its net profits to FAU Marine Research Lab at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center and also Friends of Gumbo Limbo. These organizations remove pollution from Florida’s waterways and protect and research sea turtles.

Like United By Blue, Devocean Co. offers a variety of products along with clothing, and also gives ocean-lovers a chance to get involved. Their blog provides readers with timely information about sea turtles and also gives updates on community engagement opportunities. Friends of Gumbo Limbo, one of the organizations that Devocean Co. donates to, offers even more opportunities to get involved, especially for people living in Florida.

Cleaning the world’s oceans is obviously a long-term group endeavor. It takes a village to pollute a lake and it will take a village to clean one up: so join us! The next time you have to buy something, consider buying it from an organization that fights to protect the natural world, and the next time you have a free weekend, consider getting out there and donating your time!
