MOTIVATIONAL MONDAYS // CAREN GUYETT

Caren Guyett Paddle

Meet our new Northeast Sales Rep Caren! She's a former collegiate swimmer at Colgate, which includes being a multiple school record holder and team captain (ya, we like to brag about our awesome sales reps), and a United States Lifesaving Association National Team Member. This girl knows her way around the water so look for Caren and her big smile at a Jolyn trunk show near you! If you're lucky, you might be fortunate enough to witness one of her private dance parties...

What is your favorite dryland workout? I’m a huge yoga fan and recently I've dabbled with the new challenges that CrossFit has to offer. My favorite type of dryland workout is a combination of CrossFit and swimming. We would do circuits involving some reps of walking lunges, push ups, sit ups, and/or squats and then dive into the pool for sprints, kicking, breath control work, swimming with parachutes and/or (my favorite) running a kettlebell from the deep end to the shallow end.

What is your favorite water work out?  My favorite type of water work out is anything that involves the ocean.  During the summer we take advantage of our huge beaches and do, what we call, “Man Makers.”  We have to sprint from the dunes to a mark in the water and we switch between swimming and paddling.  I don’t know if I really would call Man Makers my favorite while I’m doing them, but I always feel accomplished when I finish.

What activities do you do in JOLYN? swim, paddle, yoga, run,…

What's your favorite JOLYN color? Sunkist.. I love how you can spot it from so far away, and it doesn't hurt that it looks good with a tan ;)

What's your favorite JOLYN style and why? I love the JOLYN vent top because it stays in place and I don’t have to carry an extra gallon of water with me as I move.

If you were stranded on an island and could only bring 3 things, what would they be? 1) a swim cap and goggles 2) a paddleboard and 3) someone to keep me company (and I’d consider it a bonus if they had some survival skills haha)

What's your favorite beach that you have been to and what beach is on your list to go to?  My favorite beach would have to be in Barnegat Light, NJ (especially 17th street). I’ve guarded in BL for the past eight summers and I most accurately refer to it as “my happy place.”  I would love love love to visit the beaches in Australia or New Zealand in the future.

Who is your favorite athlete?  Jen Noonan!! My fellow Jolyn Rep, Jen is awesome at all of the ocean crafts and she has inspired me in so many ways.  She has motivated me to set new goals and learn new skills. Plus, her attitude towards life and competing is so admirable; it makes me want to make the most of the opportunities I have and find the positive in any situation.

What are 3 things on your bucket list? 1)    Become certified to teach yoga 2)    Complete a half Ironman 3)    Learn how to drive a stick shift

If you were 60 years old, what would you tell your children: “Fall down seven times, stand up eight” At Colgate, our coach drilled into our heads that the true definition of a champion is the person who gets up after they've been knocked down.  Set backs and failures are a part of life that we all have to deal with.  What really defines you is your ability to dust yourself off and stand back up.

What is the craziest thing you have ever done? I don’t know if it’s really thaaat crazy, but the summer after graduating, one of my best friends and I drove across the country (CA to NJ) in five days. It was a bucket list item and we had a ton of places we wanted to see on our list. The only mistake we made was planning the trip leading up to our summer on the beach patrol (our favorite time of year). Instead of taking our time and enjoying the trip, it sort of ended up as a race to get to the beach and involved running over some sort of crazy jackrabbit in Kansas.

What motivates you?  Lots of little things motivate me, like setting/reaching goals, hearing certain songs, reading inspirational quotes, and (right now) knowing that summer is coming.  But, I am truly at my best when I am a part of a team. Performing for others and having people count on me has always driven me. No matter how many events I swam in a weekend or a day, I was always able to find a way to get to that next level for the relay at the end of the session.  My insecurities as a competitor could always be pushed aside for those times when the team called on me. I have been really lucky to be a part of the teams I have been on. My favorite memories involve my teammates and my proudest moments are always the team accomplishments. I am very grateful to my teammates from over the years that have made me the person I am today.

What is something that nobody knows about you?  Sometimes during my workday I use bathroom breaks for short (silent) dance parties by myself. It puts a smile on my face and gives me a little extra energy to devote to whatever the job calls for that day. Weird, I know.

What would you spend your last $10 on?  Honestly, I’d probably hold on to it forever for the fear of needing it later.

What is your signature dish in the kitchen?  As a huge buffalo chicken fan, I think I've found my niche cooking any dish that involves it. Some of my favorites include buffalo chicken pizza, buffalo chicken dip, buffalo chicken wraps, buffalo chicken grilled cheese (with bacon!), and buffalo chicken bombs. My Friday nights have turned in to a night to experiment with new buffalo chicken recipes and my boyfriend and I look forward to it all week.

What is the most important part of a sandwich?  The Bread, 100%. I am all about the bread.

What is your most embarrassing moment you're willing to admit?  I think the dance party admission could also fit here…

Any last words or testimonial?  Whether your 13 or 31, don’t be afraid to set new goals or take on a new challenge.  Decide what is important to you and hold yourself accountable.  If life gets in the way, don’t downgrade your dream-- upgrade your conviction.
