Last year in Florida, I was attacked by a fin while surfing. Not a shark fin, but the fin of my longboard. I went to take a wave in on my belly to exit the water and nose dived into the sand…. The board nailed my leg as it bounced back from the impact and I came up from the water with a huge open flesh wound on my inner thigh. Initially, I thought just the impact caused the wound, but later my buddy 1benwolfe1 sent me the photo of the bloody and broken fin remaining in my log. The boys threw me in the back of the Subaru and rushed me to the Hospital. There, I was treated, taken for x rays (tbh against my will), sewn up with 12 sutures, and sent on my way. “You’ll be fine for your surf trip to Nicaragua in 2 weeks”, they said. Weeks passed and the wound wasn’t healing. I wasn’t in pain but the swelling was noticeable and the suture site wasn’t closing. I went back to urgent care to get it checked out and was given a pressure dressing and sent on my way. I spent my days land - locked taking photos of my friends surfing the hurricane swell, walking miles up and down the beach. I even played a game of pickleball, carefully yet uncomfortably. Three weeks passed and Nica was a week away. I was noticing the areas around the wound turning darker. I was starting to feel a sensation I can only equate to electricity shooting up into the injury. I went to Medac here in Wilmington, and as soon as I walked in, the doctor told me “that sure doesn’t look right”. She took me back to the procedure room, numbed me up with meds, and made a small incision to drain the abcess. “Wait…” she said. “…there’s something in here…” 5 more injections of pain meds later, and after a literal chasm was dug into my thigh, the doctor pulled out a 2.5 inch piece of fiberglass surfboard fin that was sewn into my leg 🫣 It’s the only time in my life I laughed and cried at the same time because I actually could not believe what I was seeing. And neither could the Doctor who pulled it out, to be honest. A year has passed and I am happy to say that I am completely physically fine, all have been held accountable, and now have a dent in my leg to remind me to stop being a Kook.
